Puzzle jug or "deceptive pitcher" was originally produced as a drinking game in taverns in Western Europe in the 16-19th century. The challenge of this pitcher was to drink from it without spilling on yourself.
The jug reads: "buvez je le veux bien mais sachez placer votre main"
Emilie Tessier established the open work technique that has become a specialty in classic french motifs of European earthenware factories of the 18th century.
Bottom signed TE
"The Faïenceries d'Art de Malicorne were founded in 1924 by a former worker of Léon POULARD: Émile TESSIER (1887 – 1971)."
No chips, cracks or repairs. The puzzle jug is in wonderful condition. Measures approx. 5" tall.
